03/15/12 Cormorant Fisherman statue at the Twin Lakes Overlook in Eden Park in Cincinnati, OH. Given to Cincinnati by it's sister city, Gifu, Japan in 1992. This statue depicts the 1300 year old method of fishing where a leash with a metal ring (which encircles the bird's neck) is used. The metal ring is just wide enough to let smaller fish go down the bird's throat, but leaves the bigger fish behind. The fisherman would let the Cormorant dive catching fish, then retrieve the bird back, forcing the bigger fish out of the bird's throat. Cormorants in the wild typically only live 4-5 years, but with the extra care from the Fishermen, they could live for 15-20 years in their care. The skirt worn by the fishermen was made of straw which was water repellant.
